American Hockey League Coming To Charlotte, 2010-11 CHARLOTTE, NC Charlotte Checkers owner Michael Kahn, announced today that the American Hockey League Board of Governors has approved the purchase of the Albany River Rats AHL franchise and moving the team in Charlotte, North Carolina will begin play in 2010-11.
